How to Design Your Own Kitchen

Planning a kitchen remodel is an extensive project, but breaking it down into manageable steps makes the process far more enjoyable. Before diving into design choices and decor, there are foundational decisions that set the stage for your new space. In this guide,
TheCabinetDepot.com will help you navigate crucial elements such as flooring, appliance selection, cabinet height, and color palettes — all essential considerations that will influence the flow and function of your kitchen. By thoughtfully evaluating each aspect, you’ll pave the way for a stunning and harmonious kitchen that reflects your personal style. Let's get started!

Preliminarily, you would do well to decide on the following:

  • Decide whether you are going to keep the existing flooring.

  • Decide which appliances you are going to put in the kitchen and other locations.

  • Decide whether you want to go higher with the cabinets such as from 30” upper cabinets to 42” uppers.

  • Decide on a color of RTA wood cabinets; we have the largest selection of cabinets at the best prices.

  • Decide on flooring color and countertop color, or at least a direction you want to go in including dark or light. Once you install the cabinets you can decide on the countertop and flooring color. It is better to pick cabinet color first because it is normally the highest ticket item in a kitchen remodel.

  • Measure your kitchen walls, plumbing locations, gas locations, electrical locations, etc. This is one of the most important steps in the process. If you are installing yourself then you do it or whomever is installing the cabinets then they should do it with your close consultation. The measurements should be with ¼”.

Let’s take these one by one.

Flooring

You will have to decide if you are going to keep your existing flooring because normally the cabinets are put in before flooring. When you take the old cabinets out, you will leave a cabinet footprint. If there is a cabinet footprint and you are not replacing the floor, the kitchen will need to be designed to cover those footprints. Normally, you can just order the same size RTA cabinets that were originally there and that would solve any potential problem. (You can install cabinets over the flooring and in some parts of the country installing cabinets over the flooring is more common).

Appliances

The appliances selection from TheCabinetDepot.com go into great detail about how each can turn your home into something special.

Upper Cabinets

You may be able to go higher with the upper cabinets in your kitchen. Read our Cabinets 101 guide to view your options when it comes to cabinet height.

Color Scheme

Lastly, decide on the color of the cabinets, flooring, and countertops. We suggest that you contrast the flooring, cabinet, and countertop color, but it is up to your own personal taste.

Final Steps

The last step is to measure everything accurately in the kitchen and execute on your design. Order all the beautiful RTA cabinets you need from TheCabinetDepot.com and let us help you create the perfect interior design.
